No. PVC and TPO are different thermoplastic formulations — they are not chemically compatible and cannot be heat-welded together. EPDM is a thermoset material and cannot be welded at all. If a Columbus commercial building has an existing TPO or EPDM membrane and requires a PVC replacement in one section, the incompatible membrane must be removed in the transition zone and a proper termination detail installed at the perimeter of the new PVC area. We document incompatibility issues in our scope and do not install PVC patches on TPO or EPDM substrates.
PVC is somewhat less flexible at low temperatures than EPDM — older plasticized PVC formulations could become brittle at sub-zero temperatures. Modern PVC membrane formulations from Sika Sarnafil and Carlisle contain plasticizer systems that maintain adequate flexibility through Columbus's winter temperature range. PVC seam integrity in freeze-thaw conditions is excellent — the heat-welded seams perform similarly to TPO welded seams in thermal cycling.
